Chronic Pain

Chronic Pain is usually referred to as pain of longer duration than the pain from an injury that might resolve in a matter of days or weeks. Chronic pain is a complex experience, and it has no easy “fix”. The onset of chronic pain can vary.  Some people have an injury, accident, painful or traumatic event and pain lingers long after it seems that the injuries have healed. Sometimes there is an obvious reason for the pain, like nerve damage, but most times there is no apparent injury or biological cause for the pain. Part of the complexity of pain management is that pain is not just a sensation. It is an experience and the brain has been changed by the pain experience. The pain experience is not only informed by its apparent origin but also by personal factors, like culture, previous experiences with pain, mental health, support, financial means, education, health status, and environment among others. With chronic pain, the alarm system in the brain that usually keeps you safe is now overreactive and making you feel pain that does not correspond with the physical stimuli. A light massage on your shoulders feels too painful and you have become jumpy to even a soft touch. To complicate it further, people who experience chronic pain are often left feeling like healthcare professionals or people around them do not believe them and that the pain is in their heads. This leads to feelings of isolation, and despair.
